The National River Health Program's Australian River Assessment Scheme (AusRivAS) uses macroinvertebrates (and other biological indicators), and has been developed over the period 1993 – 2000. AusRivAS includes protocols for live pick and lab sort macroinvertebrate sampling, physico-chemical monitoring, habitat assessment, and state-wide Spring, Autumn, and combined seasons models for edge and riffle habitats. AusRivAS has been used extensively in the Australia-wide Assessment of River Health of some 6 000 sites around Australia over the past six years. The website address for AusRivAS is http://ausrivas.canberra.edu.au/ausrivas

Research in Australia into rapid Biological Assessment (RBA) using biomonitoring techniques, based on macroinvertebrates, diatoms, fish, macrophytes, and benthic community metabolism, is being undertaken by various state government agencies, institutions, community groups, and individuals associated with the National River Health Program (NRHP) and other Natural Heritage Trust activities.

An indicative list of outputs from the National River Health Program's biological monitoring research is provided below. This indicative list includes examples of reports, legislation, and policies that are either based on or utilise National River Health Program outputs.
